Understanding the Process
It all starts with a free in-home estimate. We listen to what you want and inform you of the process and options you have. We make time to answer all your questions and address your concerns. We look at the condition of the floors and provide you with accurate pricing and the time it will take to complete the job.
We ask the rooms to be empty when we arrive. We can help you move some items but we don’t move anything too heavy or delicate. As an extra precaution we cover door entries with plastic to prevent dust from spilling into other rooms.
We sand the floors completely with rough paper, medium paper, and finally fine paper. We use a small hand scraper and remove any finish in the corners or any place the edger couldn’t reach. After buffing, we give the floor a thorough vacuuming.
We begin applying sealer to make your floor look clear or stain depending if you want to change the color of your floors.
We apply two coats of Polyurethane. The first coat is water based that dries in about an hour and then we apply a coat of oil based polyurethane that will take 24 hours to dry. If you prefer the floor to be matte we can apply a water based polyurethane instead of oil. After we are done we clean up anything left behind and address any concerns or questions you may have.
Sealers penetrate the wood and enhance its color and clarity. Sealer is the first product used in the finishing process unless staining the color of the wood is desired.
Staining is an optional step and is only used when you want to change the color of the wood in contrast to its natural color.
Oil-based polyurethane gives your floor a warm amber color and offers great durability. It has a strong odor when applying and can turn yellow overtime.
Water-based polyurethane is fast drying, non-yellowing and has very little odor. It offers great durability and can give your floor an excellent look.
Polyurethane comes in three types of sheen: gloss, semi-gloss and satin. Think of sheen in terms of the amount of shine your floor will have.
